When I woke up today I was thinking of that wonderful book. I grew up with the book and it was one of my favorites as a young child. If you haven't read it or have a young child in your life I urge you to pick it up. Which I made easy for you "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak can be pick up on Amazon. I am not writing this up just to have you go shopping for books (which is always a blast. Almost as fun as shopping in a feed store.) but wrote to share in my wild day of where the my wild things live. Every day here starts the same, wake up, cup of coffee, wake up a bit and out to milk the girls. Well since the pups (we have two litters of LGD) are eating dog food I feed them first and get my grain together and go get the girls. Well... today I took a little bit of a detour and took some photos of my hooligans. So by the time I got to the milk house I was rushing around to get feed in buckets and pups to be fed (who at this time were not happy with the fact I did not stick with the pre scheduled program. ) So to say I was a little rush is an understatement... so when I bent down to get dog food and felt something strike me in the back of the neck... I lost it. We have a snake that I have heard more then once in the milk house. I have heard it and it sounds like a rattlesnake. That scary sound you never forget once you hear it. Being a snake person I held out hope it would be a bull snake or rat snake playing "Hey I am a big bad rattlesnake... hear me vibrate?" Let me tell you the sheer panic you feel when you think you were just struck by rattlesnake. The thought of 'I am going to die. I am going to have a huge hospital bill. Who is going to milk the girls as I recover... if I don't die.' All those things went through my mind in seconds. Lucky for me I seen the last 6 inches or so of his/hers/its back and seen it was blackish colored. So being a reptile fan from a young child I knew we were dealing with something like a black rat snake, king snake... nothing venomous. So I relax a little... until the pain hit me. I have been bit many times by snakes (always my fault not paying attention) but this one hurt. Hurt horribly painfully bad, so I ran into the house were my sleeping boyfriend was. Shaking him I screamed "Wake up, I have been bit by the snake in the milk house.'' I have never seen Eric jump up so fast... maybe I should of said it wasn't venomous? Nah... what fun would that be for him lol. He looked it over and the snake got me right on the vertebrae of my neck. So I am assuming that is why it hurt so bad ? I don't know... so washed it up and went back outside to finish my chores. Walking into the milk house saying "Snake Mr Snakey dude I am not here to kill you. Just want to get my grain and all will be good." Feeling like a total dork and thankful I was alone I was grabbing bags, and totes of feed and throwing them outside the milk house. Just knowing I was going to be struck again, I actually started laughing... laughing uncontrollably. Here I am 32 years old and was never scared of snakes in my life and I stand here throwing grain bags out and jumping at every little sound I heard. I am pretty sure the snake was more scared then I was and I didn't see it flipping out. Throwing his mice over his ummm errr.. "shoulders" in a total panic. It didn't help stop my laughter when I look over to see this.... |
Yes that look on their little faces is for sure "You have lost your ever loving mind lady." So needless to say I finished milking, and put everything back in the milk house. The whole time giggling to myself. It is never a dull moment here. Thankfully I am okay, and none of the animals were bit. I guess where my wild things live is in my milk house and they chill on the feed bins.
Until later have a Bless day and stay away from the snakes.
